An Overview of MPLS, MPLS Service and MPLS Networks
What is MPLS? MPLS stands for Multi Protocol Label Switching and is a networking technology that is responsible for directing and carrying data from one network node to the next. MPLS is classified as a Private Network Transport (PNT) service and is in the packet switching family. MPLS PNT was originally presented as a way of improving the forwarding speed of routers; however, it has emerged as a standard technology offering new capabilities to large scale IP networks. The key differentiating factors of MPLS include traffic engineering, ability to dictate the path that traffic takes through the network and Virtual Private Network (VPN) support.
How does MPLS work? In an MPLS network, IP packets are assigned labels by the first MPLS device they encounter. The MPLS edge device router analyzes the contents of the IP header and selects the appropriate label with which to encapsulate the packet. At its destination, the MPLS edge router removes the label to present the data in its original form. The labeling process isolates the data thus protecting it from outside access as defined by the VPN. In contrast to conventional IP routing, MPLS allows the data to be transferred based on the label and not the IP header. Therefore, the forwarding decisions are based on more than the destination address carried in the IP header.
What type of businesses use MPLS? MPLS service is typically used by mid-sized businesses and large enterprises that operate out of multiple locations and require a secure, flexible and cost-effective solution. MPLS is used to support a wide range of applications including VoIP, content delivery, file transfers/sharing, central data storage and backup as well as remote user access. MPLS pricing starts at around $399 per month per location for a 1.5 Mbps T1 with local loop and Cisco router. What are the benefits of MPLS? There are many benefits associated with MPLS protocol. MPLS is a multi-protocol technology supporting numerous access services including T1, T3, DS3, OC and Ethernet. MPLS is also highly regarded for reliability which includes a proven track record of low latency and packet loss when delivering data. MPLS is a very secure technology due to the encapsulation of IP packets and encryption over the IP backbone network. From a cost perspective, MPLS is a very affordable option when compared to other solutions including private line connectivity or site-to-site tunnels. Lastly, MPLS offers increased flexibility making it easier to establish, configure and manage the network. It also allows for the prioritization of traffic such as voice traffic.
